About Retire Beyond Borders
What this is
Retire Beyond Borders is an independent information service for people in the UK who are weighing up retirement abroad. We publish plain-English guides and a free newsletter that set out the figures and the rules, with sources, so you can check them yourself.
Why it exists
I started Retire Beyond Borders after seeing the same pattern again and again: people delaying retirement for years, not because they couldn’t afford it, but because of assumptions about where they needed to live. The aim is to lay out the full picture so you can decide with your eyes open.
How we write our guides
- Primary sources first. We start from government and official statistics sources, such as GOV.UK, Spanish ministries, the Spanish tax agency and INE.
- Secondary sources are labelled. Where we rely on law firms, comparators or property portals, we say so and link to them.
- Every guide is dated. Each page shows when it was last reviewed. Check the date before you rely on a figure.
- Examples are marked as examples. When we calculate an illustration, such as a rent for an 80 square metre home, we say how we worked it out.
- If we can’t verify it, we leave it out. We would rather publish less than guess.
How we make money
The guides and the newsletter are free. Some newsletter issues may link to products or services we could earn a commission from, for example a currency transfer service. We say so wherever that applies, and it never costs you extra. We do not take payment to change what a guide says.
Corrections
If you spot an error or an out-of-date figure, reply to any newsletter email and we will check it and correct the page.
